Population  170,000 in Tanzania (1987). Population total all countries: 223,000.
Region  South central, Ruvuma region, south of Songea. Also in Mozambique.
Language map  Tanzania, reference number 100
Alternate names   Angoni, Chingoni, Kingoni, Kisutu, Sutu
Dialects  Different from ‘Ngoni’ which is an alternate name for Zulu [zul], Ngoni dialect of Nsenga [nse], Ngoni dialect of Tumbuka [tum]. Not related to Ngoni [nya] of Malawi. Low lexical similarity percentage with Zulu.
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, N, Manda (N.10)
Language development  Bible portions: 1891–1898.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  The people formerly spoke Zulu. The Ngoni in Malawi do not speak Ngoni, but all speak Nyanja [nya] as L1.
