A language of Democratic Republic of the Congo

Population  43,000 (1993 SIL).
Region  Orientale Province, Ituri District, Djugu Territory, Kilo Collectivité.
Language map  Northern Democratic Republic of Congo
Alternate names   Huku, Linyali, North Nyali, Nyali-Kilo, Nyari
Dialects  Only one dialect, since ‘Nyali-South’ is actually Vanuma [vau]. Vanuma, Mbo [mbo], Ndaka [ndk], Budu [buu], and Nyali [nlj] speakers are more similar to each other than to other border Bantu languages. Lexical similarity: 85% with Vanuma, 76% with Mbo, 73% with Ndaka and Budu.
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, D, Bira-Huku (D.30)
Language use  A local language committee has been promoting Nyali since 1982.
Comments  ‘Huku’ is reportedly a Hema term used for anyone who is not a Hema.
