Population  31,700,000 in India (1997). Population total all countries: 31,732,500.
Region  Orissa; Jharkhand, Singhbhum, Ranchi districts; Chhattisgarh, Raigarh, Raipur, Bastar districts; West Bengal, Medinipur (Midnapore) District; Assam; Andhra Pradesh, Vishakhapatnam District. Also in Bangladesh.
Alternate names   Odri, Odrum, Oliya, Orissa, Uriya, Utkali, Vadiya, Yudhia
Dialects  Mughalbandi (Oriya Proper, Standard Oriya), Southern Oriya, Northwestern Oriya, Western Oriya (Sambalpuri), North Balasore Oriya, Midnapore Oriya, Halbi. Some larger dialects have many subdialects. Sambalpuri around Sambalpur and Sundargh is highly similar to Standard Oriya.
