Dialects	76% intelligibility with Metzontla Popoloca [pbe] (most simlar), 26% of San Felipe Popoloca [pow].
Classification	Oto-Manguean, Popolocan, Chocho-Popolocan, Popolocan
Language use	Vigorous. Some Nahuatl in Chilac speak some Popoloca. Some temporary migration for jobs, but retain the language. A lot of migration for jobs among young people to States. All domains. Oral use in local administration, commerce. Oral and written use in primary and secondary school, religious services. All ages. Strong pride in culture and language. Most women over 60 functionally monolingual; perhaps 500 people. Most men also speak primary Spanish. Many women who cannot speak Spanish speak Nahuatl for trading in San Gabriel Chilac. Onyx and sugarcane workers have team leaders who speak Spanish for them.
Language development	Literacy rate in L1: 30%. Literacy rate in L2: 60%. 2,000 readers, 200 can write. Dictionary. NT: 1982.
Writing system	Latin script.
Comments	VSO; short words, affixes, clitics; tonal. Pastoralists: goats; onyx miners; potters; sewing factories.
