Population  37,700 (2001 census).
Region  North Kashmir, Kargil District, mainly Suru Valley; Dras Valley, some in western Himalayas.
Alternate names   Burig, Burigskat, Purig, Purigskad, Purik Bhotia, Purki
Dialects  Similar to Balti [bft].
Classification  Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Himalayish, Tibeto-Kanauri, Tibetic, Tibetan, Western
Language use  Dominant language in Kargil District. A few also use Urdu [urd].
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: 61%. Grammar. NT: 1950.
Writing system  Arabic script.
Comments  People are called ‘Purig-pa’. ‘Purig’ means ‘of Tibetan origin’. People prefer to be culturally and linguistically identified with Tibet, although religiously with Islam. A Scheduled Tribe. Muslim (Shi’a).
