Population  14,300 (2000).
Region  Tuy, Ioba, Bougouriba, and Poni provinces; north and west of Diébougou; northeast of Dano. Scattered villages in Dagaari territory.

Alternate names   Buguli, Buguri, Phuien, Pougouli, Puguli, Pwa, Pwe, Pwie, Pwien, Pwo
Dialects  Phuie is closely related to Winye [kst] and Sisaala [sld].
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, North, Gur, Central, Southern, Grusi, Western
Language use  Vigorous. All ages. Positive attitude. Also use Northern Dagaari [dgi], Jula [dyu], or French.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 0%. Literacy rate in L2: 1% in French. Motivation for literacy is high.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  ‘Puguli’ is used by outsiders, ‘Phu’ is their name for one person, ‘Phuo’ for the people. Tonal. Peasant agriculturalists. Traditional religion, Christian.
