Population  250,000 (1994 census), increasing. 80,000 monolinguals.
Region  East Ancash Department, Chavín to San Luis to Llamellín; northwest Huánuco Department: Huacaybamba, Huacrachuco, San Buenaventura, and Pinra districts, much of southern Marañon Province.

A member of macrolanguage Quechua [que] (Peru).
Language use  Official language. Vigorous in most but not all communities. Spanish-speaking health workers and teachers learn Quechua in order to communicate. All domains, local administration, written and oral interpretation of Spanish used in church, oral use in commerce and labor relations, used at health centers. Positive attitude. Also use some Spanish [spa]. Possibly 20 individuals also use some English [eng].
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: Below 1%. Literacy rate in L2: 15%–25%. Taught in primary and secondary schools. Radio programs. TV. NT: 2002.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  SOV. Agriculturalists. Christian, syncretism, traditional religion.
