Population  280 (2000), decreasing. 130 nomadic Raute. Ethnic population: 658.
Region  Mainly west, Seti zone, Achham, Doti districts; Bheri zone, Surkhet, Jajarkot, Banke districts; Rapti zone, Pyuthan District; Karnali zone, Jumla, Dolpa districts. Since 2001 nomadic movement limited to Surkhet and Jajarkot districts.

Dialects  May be a dialect of Rawat [jnl].
Classification  Sino-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Himalayish, Mahakiranti, Kiranti, Western
Language use  All ages. Nomadic Raute are secretive about their language; settled Raute are not. Some youth in Nepal speak Nepali or Hindi among themselves in front of outsiders. Viewed as low caste by others. Settled Raute also use Nepali [nep].
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: 26% (1991 census).
Comments  Migratory cycle reportedly about 2 years. May have been joined to the Rawat and Raji, but those groups are now settled. An official nationality. Tribal numbers dropping due to diminishing forest habitat, which is now open to other ethnic groups who discourage the Raute from staying. Hunter-gatherers. Traditional religion.
