Dangraq-Mashang, Ganong (Jerwang-Daru), Khingpang (Anong), Longmi, Marangdong-Jigong, Matwang, Tangsar (Mabuq-Chinle), Thrung. Reported to have 75 to 100 dialects, although these may represent only 5 to 8 dialect subgroups. Some are inherently mutually unintelligible. Some speakers of most dialects reportedly understand Matwang, a central, written dialect. Five major divisions of clans (with numerous subclans): Longmi, Matwang, Ganong (Daru-Jerwang), Tangsar, Anong. Intermarriage patterns among clans may affect dialect relationships. Dialect continuum with Nu nationality in China. Dialects near the Tibet border are more divergent. Related to Kunglang in India, but contact was cut off in 1950s. |
