Population  49,000 (2002 census).
Region  Hoima and Masindi districts, Buliisa, Bilso, and Kigorobya subcounties, Rift Valley, Lake Albert northeast shore; hills above the valley.

Alternate names   Lugungu, Rugungu
Dialects  58% or lower inherent intelligibility with Nyoro-Tooro. Tooro [ttj] is the most similar language. Lexical similarity: 65% with Tooro.
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, J, Nyoro-Ganda (J.10)
Language use  Positive attitude. Also use some Nyoro [nyo], Alur [alz], English, or Swahili [swh].
Language development  Taught in primary schools. Radio programs. Bible portions: 1998.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  ‘Bagungu’ is the ethnic group. SVO; genitives, adjectives, relatives after noun heads; question word final; word order distinguishes subject and object; subject agreement obligatory, object agreement optional; verb suffixes mark subject, object, tense, aspect, and negation; verb suffixes mark perfective, applicative, reversive, stative, reciprocal, passive, and causative; contrastive vowel length, upper 7-vowel system with vowel harmony; V, CV, CVV, (C)C(C)V where first C is a nasal and last C a semivowel; tonal. Fishermen; peasant agriculturalists; pastoralists. Christian, Muslim.
