Population  450 (2000 M. Brenzinger), decreasing. Ethnic population: 600 or more (2000).
Region  Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region, Sheka zone; Gambella region, Majangir zone between Godere and Mashi, among Majang [mpe] and Shekkacho [moy].

Alternate names   “Mekeyer” , “Mikair” , “Mikeyir” , Sabu, “Shako”
Dialects  Distinct from Sheko [she]. Lexical similarity: 30% with Majang, 12% with other West Cushitic (Omotic) languages.
Classification  Nilo-Saharan, Unclassified
Language use  Most domains. Used by about half the children. Neutral attitude. Also use Majang or Shekkacho.
Comments  The Shabo people call themselves Sabu. They do not like the names “Shako” and “Mekeyer” used by outsiders. “Shako” and “Mekeyer” are names for the Shabo used by the Shekkacho and Majang, respectively. They live in family units, not villages. SOV; postpositions; gender in all 3 persons. Hunter-gatherers; beekeepers. Traditional religion, Christian.
