Population  273,000 (1997 IMA).
Region  Bihar, Purnia, Kishanganj, Katihar, Araria districts; West Bengal, Uttar Dinajpur District.
Alternate names   Sura
Dialects  Preliminary survey results show sufficient intelligibility with Nepali Rajbanshi [rjs]. 70%–74% with Hindi, 67%–71% with the western variety of Kamta [rkt] spoken near Dinajpur, 77%–86% between varieties of Surjapuri [sjp].

Language use  Vigorous. Home, village. All ages. Positive attitude. Also use Hindi.
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: Low (2006 M. Toulmin). Different scripts in Nepal and India.
Writing system  Devanagari script.
Comments  Possible alternate names are Chaupal, Choupal, Suraji, but surveyors did not find these terms used. Historically more closely related to Kamta and Rajbanshi than Hindi, a relationship that is borne out in greater morphological similarity. (2006 M. Toulmin).
