Population  30,000 (2002 SIL).
Region  Arusha region, Ngorongoro District, north central near Kenya border, Maasai area. 7 villages: Sale (Eroghata), Mdito, Samunge (Soyeta), Digodigo (Ebwe), Kisangiro (Raghari), Mugholo (Gheeri), Oldonyo Sambu (Kura).

Alternate names   Kisonjo, Sonjo, Sonyo, Wasonjo, Watemi
Dialects  Reportedly shows some similarities to Gikuyu [kik] of Kenya.
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Bantoid, Southern, Narrow Bantu, Central, E, Kuria (E.10)
Language use  Most also use Swahili [swh]. Swahili used in education.
Comments  ‘Wasonjo’ is a misnomer, referring to beans of the Batemi plant. They call their language ‘GiTemi’, and themselves the ‘Batemi’. They hold joint religious ceremonies with Aasáx [aas]. Pastoralists; agriculturalists, irrigation. Traditional religion, Christian.
