Region  Karnataka, South Kanara (Dakshina Kannada) and Udipi districts; Kerala, Kasargod District; scattered in other states in India.

Dialects  Northwest Tulu (Udipi, Mangalore), Northeast Tulu (Kerala, Belthangadi), Southwest Tulu (Manjeswara, Kasaragod), Southcentral Tulu (Bantwal, Puttur), Southeast (Sullia Subrahmanya), Brahmin Tulu, Common Tulu.

Language use  Also use Kannada [kan], Hindi, English, or Marathi [mar].
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: 80%–83% in Dakshina Kannada [kan] for Udipi districts. Magazines. Radio programs. Films. Dictionary. Grammar. NT: 1847–2000.
Writing system  Kannada script. Tulu script, philosophical texts and religious verses are sometimes written in this script.
