Banda, Togbo-Vara

A language of Democratic Republic of the Congo

Population  12,000 in Democratic Republic of the Congo (1984 census). Population total all countries: 24,000.
Region  Equateur Province, Nord Ubangi, Bosobolo Territory, Badja and Baya town areas, Vongba II and Bandema village areas, on the road as far as Gwara II, and scattered nearby. Also in Central African Republic, Sudan.
Language map  Northern Democratic Republic of Congo
Dialects  Togbo (Tohgboh, Tagbo).
Classification  Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, North, Adamawa-Ubangi, Ubangi, Banda, Central, Central Core, Togbo-Vara
Language use  Also use Mono [mnh], but they view themselves as very different from Mono. Many men, especially young men, also speak Lingala [lin] or Sango [sag].
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: Low in Lingala and not increasing.
Comments  Different from Tagbu [tbm] of Democratic Republic of the Congo in Sere group.
