Population  100,000 (1993 SIL). 50,000 are monolingual. All Tzeltal varieties: 215,145 (1980 census).
Region  East central Chiapas, Chilon and Ocosingo municipalities.

Dialects  Amatenango del Valle.

Language use  Vigorous. Some families now use Spanish. Some Ch’ol [ctu] in north border area and lowland have learned Tzeltal. All domains. Minimal use in government schools. Oral use in local commerce. Oral and written use in religion. All ages. Positive attitude. Also use Spanish or Ch’ol.
Language development  50,000 readers, 40,000 can write. Radio programs. Dictionary. NT: 1964.
Writing system  Latin script.
