Language use  Primary schools for deaf children since 1962. Several SLs merged in 1988. Sign Language allowed in the classroom since 1988. Classroom SL and that used by adults outside is the same. Some interpreters are provided for deaf people in court. Little research. Few sign language classes for hearing people. Recognized as a minority language in 1995. Interpretation provided in parliament. Promotion by the Uganda National Association of the Deaf. Positive attitude. Influences from Kenyan Sign Language [xki] and ASL [ase]. Knowledge of English not widespread.
