Population  70,000 (2000 SIL), decreasing. No monolinguals. Ethnic population: 70,000.
Region  Luzon, northern Zambales Province, 5 towns, 2 villages in Pangasinan Province, and village of Panitian, Quezon on Palawan Island.

Dialects  Santa Cruz, Masinloc, Iba. 70% intelligibility with Botolan.
Classification  Austronesian, Malayo-Polynesian, Philippine, Central Luzon, Sambalic
Language use  Young people start using it in work situations if they do not go on to higher education; little use among children. All domains among adults. Oral use in local commerce, occasional use in religion and political campaigning. Some letter writing. Adults. They do not use Sambal around outsiders, but they like it when a few outsiders learn Sambal. Also use Filipino [fil], Ilocano [ilo], or English.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: 98%. Literacy rate in L2: 98%. Orthography similar to Filipino. Poetry. Newspapers. Radio programs. Videos. Dictionary. Grammar. NT: 1999.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  There is migration to cities for economic improvement. Agriculturalists: rice; fishermen. Christian, syncretism.
