Population  5,690 in Peru (2000). 2,000 monolinguals. Ethnic population: 6,000.
Region  Northeast Amazon River region, Loreto, from Iquitos to Brazil border. Also in Colombia.

Classification  Peba-Yaguan
Language use  Official language. All domains. Some use in religious ceremonies and services. 8 bilingual schools. Most people along the main rivers are apathetic, preferring their children to learn Spanish. Many are monolingual in isolated areas.
Language development  Literacy rate in L1: Below 1%. Literacy rate in L2: 25%–50%. Taught in primary schools. Dictionary. Grammar. NT: 1994.
Writing system  Latin script.
Comments  Some go to urban centers like Iquitos for economic reasons. Some occasionally go into Brazil. VSO. Swidden agriculturalists; hunters; fishermen. Christian, traditional religion.
