Population  60,000 (1998 INDBT).
Region  Chhattisgarh, Bastar District; Orissa, Koraput, Nabarangapur districts.
Alternate names   Mirgami, Mirkan, Panika, Panka
Dialects  Batasuna, Jagdal Pur, Kosagumuda, Kotpad, Nabarang Pur, Umerkote. Dialects have good intelligibility. Not functionally intelligible with Halbi [hlb]. Lexical similarity: 83%–95% among dialects.
Classification  Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Eastern zone, Bengali-Assamese
Language use  Vigorous. Home, religion. Positive attitude. Speakers also use Oriya [ori], Deshia [dso], Hindi, or Halbi [hlb] in Madhya Pradesh.
Language development  Literacy rate in L2: 10% Oriya [ori].
Writing system  Oriya script. Telugu script.
Comments  Declared a General Caste by the government. Divided into 2 groups, the larger Kabirpanthi and the smaller, less advanced Sakta. Traditionally weavers, now peasant agriculturalists; pastoralists; city workers. Traditional religion mixed with Hinduism, Christian.
