3,000,000 in Iran (Fattah 2000). All Kurdish: 5,390,000 (2014 M. Izady).

Location

West, mainly Kermanshah and Ilam provinces; to east, Hamadan, Lorestan, Kordestan, and Khuzestan provinces; southeast, small area in Sistan va Baluchestan Province.

Home. Also use Iranian Persian [pes], Northern Luri [lrc]. Used as L2 by Gurani [hac].

Language Development
Teaching of literature in regional languages of Iran is allowed in the 1979 Constitution. In practice, the use of Kurdish in general education in local situations has been limited. Bible portions: 1894–1900.
